Technique/Style

I consider every landscape project a unique opportunity to create a work of art.

Following the initial client interview, I carefully evaluate focal points, environmental conditions, privacy, and permanent features. Measurements of existing structures are confirmed, and the planning process begins.

My drawings are done to scale to ensure an accurate material count and placement for visual balance. New structures and lawn lines are defined early in the process based on how the yard is used and from which direction it is viewed. Plants are then selected for harmony or contrast, their growth patterns, and eventual size. In my designs, plants are allowed to attain their natural shape, barely knitting together at maturity. This method has several maintenance benefits for both the landscape and the homeowner in terms of less pruning, shaded roots, reduced evaporation, less mulch and irrigation. A continuous canopy of foliage provides birds and other wildlife nesting opportunities and a place to forage for food protected from predators.

But the design process doesn’t end there. As I work, I also give careful thought to winter interest, maintenance, and pathways. No stone is left unturned. Finally, I use the repetition of colors, patterns, and textures to tie everything together. Considerable effort is made to ensure the landscape complements the house and ages gracefully with minimal effort from the homeowner.
